To Paul: Thanks for the offers! I'm on the west coast, so you are a bit out of my neighborhood, but we can certainly exchange some ideas via email. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and encouragement. Don't worry, I'll be back at my printer by Friday. Its time to take off my photographers hat and put on the Santa hat. Be warned, however, that my availability to try things and report back will be limited over the next few days. If any one has additional suggestions regarding my second problem, I'm eager to hear about them. This suggests that I had two problems, originally, and that only one of them has been solved by cleaning the paper grabber. However, If I orient the ramp to run in landscape mode, I only get about half the ramp. For example, if I print a 21-step gradient ramp towards the top half of a page (in portrait orientation) I can get the whole thing printed. Bad News: Frequently, the machine prints a few inches of image and then spits the paper out of the printer. It not only worked on Red River Aurora 250 (13.5mil thick), it also worked on Red River Aurora 285 (18 mil thick). Results are in: Good News: Cleaning the rubber on the paper grabber made a big difference in getting the paper started properly. I don't have a stock supply of pure ethanol-although if this printer continues to baffle me, I might just get some for medicinal purposes -:) Brian If I do need to swap it for a different printer I can probably get back almost everything I paid for it.) I'll report back soon. (Fortunately, I bought this printer just before the prices skyrocketed. I finally did this over the past 2 weeks and am now in the process of running 21-step gray ramps and determining ink limits and densities. The printer has mostly sat unused waiting for me to get inspired to equip it with refillable carts and Eboni ink. I mention this because I'm doubting there is much dirt and grime to remove. Does all this sound right to you both? My printer is almost brand new and has probably printed less than 40 sheets of paper (mostly office paper). This rubber tire looks about 3/4" wide and the cam-shaped piece it fits around is probably 2" or so in diameter. Kelly, Thanks for the tip! I'm assuming the part to clean is what appears to be a "rubber tire" around an oblong (cam-shaped) grabber-feeder that is visible near the right side of the paper shoot when looking down into the paper path from above. It would be difficult to find another printer/software combination to beat 1430/QTR. Just that extra thickness of this paper's new version makes it more difficult, it's still stubborn at times. Anyway, this usually works for me, hope it helps you. The roller seems to pick up "paper dust", if the printer you acquired is used, it may have an accumulation of this dust. I do that 3-4 times then wait about 5-10 minutes for the roller to dry. There's no paper in the feeder tray, it's empty. I lightly spray the foam rubber, and I hold it against the pick up roller (the side away from you) while I initiate a paper feed. I have a bottle of distilled water with a spray head. I use one of those foam rubber paint brushes sold in any hardware or paint store. One thing you might try is to clean the rubber pickup roller. they just recently went to a thicker version of a paper that used to be easier for the printer to load. Hello, I have the exact same setup, 1430 printer, QTR, RR Aurora Natural 250 paper. Otherwise I'll have to either be content with the Epson driver, or sell this printer and get a replacement that handles thicker media within QTR. If anyone has experience with this printer, please let me know what I am doing wrong.

I have managed to get a few pages to print if I furst curl the paper and then apply gentle pressure on the back edge of the paper as it slowly feeds all the way through the printer-But this is a nutty way to have to print and it only works about once out of every three attempts. Back in older days, Epson had a mechanical method to switch to thick paper but now its all software driven.
#RIP SOFTWARE FOR EPSON ARTISAN 1430 DRIVER#
I can print on this paper using the Epson driver if I toggle the "thick paper and envelopes" option on the "maintenance" tab, but this action doesn't carry over into any subsequent use of QTR and Roy Harrington has confirmed to me that the QTR driver doesn't access this software toggle. It won't print on any of the fine art papers I've tried, including relatively thin papers like Red River Aurora Natural 250 (13.5 mils thick). So far, QTR seems fairly straight forward but the printer has me baffled. I'm new to QTR and I've recently acquired an Epson 1430 with the intention of printing BW fine art photos using one of Paul Roark's inksets.
